Blackburn Hamlet Cancer Chase

Rogers TV - Daytime Interview with Event Chair Bill Horne

Special thanks to Metro Blackburn Shoppes

Cancer Chase deeply appreciates all our sponsors and donors, but we’d like to give a special shout-out to Chris Shaheen, the Store Manager of Blackburn Shoppes Metro. Chris let us use the shopper exit area to solicit donations for Cancer Chase last year, and we are there again this year. In just Saturday and Sunday of Labour Day weekend, our Cancer Chase volunteers have managed to collect $1,172.75 from legions of amazing Metro shoppers. Incredible!! All that money supports cancer research at the world class Ottawa Hospital.

Chris has placed Cancer Chase posters at all cashier locations, and made the Cancer Chase volunteers feel very welcome. We will be back on the weekends of September 9-10, and 16-17, roughly 9-5, and the final day before Cancer Chase, September 23.

Look forward to seeing you there in support of the Sixth Annual 5k Walk/Run Cancer Chase!

Ottawa Community News - article by Brier Dodge

It’s been 15 years since Michele Chung passed following her fight with breast cancer, but her memory is living strong.

Chung was 28 years old when she died on Aug. 28, 2002, after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Her family and friends, many of whom live in Blackburn Hamlet, will be walking and running in her memory this year at the Blackburn Cancer Chase, an annual fundraiser for cancer research in the hamlet.

Cancer Chase 2017 partners with the Ottawa Hospital Foundation’s Michele Karen Chung Legacy Endowment Fund for Oncology

In a wonderful example of how chance can bring together like minded partners, Cancer Chase will be working with the Michele Karen Chung Fund organizers to benefit cancer fighting causes.

Briefly, Michele Karen grew up with many close high school friends and connections in Blackburn Hamlet. She had a full and rich life in so many ways, and died of breast cancer at age 29. Her family started a fund at the Ottawa Hospital Foundation to raise money for equipment for cancer patients. Cancer Chase exists to provide funding for cancer research.

Michele’s family will be inviting her many friends and relatives to join Cancer Chase on September 24, to raise additional funds for cancer research, and we all be promoting the need for increasing cancer funding in many ways.

Our 2017 Cancer Chase takes place close to the 15th anniversary of her death and a week after the event she would have been 44.

Michele’s mother and brother live in the Hamlet, and you may see references to this partnership in the media.

Last year we encouraged folks to support the world class research at the Ottawa Hospital on cancer fighting immune system research, and this year we hope we can both benefit from increased awareness of the need for funding in all aspects.
